Designer Profile Lee Hanson

This week we start our new blog series profiling the amazing graphic designers who collaborate with us to create our customizable wedding invitations.

Lee is a passionate Senior Designer, who has a eye for excellent quality design. He is a founding member of the Creative Wedding Invites team and we are excited for him to continue using his unique design perspective to create beautiful invitation designs for our clients’ wedding day.

How long have you been a graphic designer and what is your favourite part of your job?

Commercially for 22 years now. That makes me sound quite old!

What do you love most about weddings?

I love the way they are all so different. How each wedding has a personality and feeling of its own. Plus, of course the commitment that two people in love are making to each other. Having been married to my beautiful bride for over 17 years, a wedding always takes me back to our simple, but wonderful, life-changing day.

What is your design process when designing an invitation?

I always believe that less is more, so for me a great wedding invitation is simple, but stunning. I try and make my designs appeal to both the bride and the groom (so probably are a bit less feminine than other designers’ aesthetic). An invitation needs to convey the right amount of information, without looking “wordy” or cluttered. This is a fine balance, which I think we get right in our invitation designs.

What are the current trends in wedding invitations?

The last few years have seen a return to simple and understated. Nice fonts and typography, combined with modern colour palettes and touches of hand-drawn art make a wedding invite feel more relaxed and warm than the very formal styles of a few years ago. Leafy, watercolour elements and a fairly autumnal feel seem to be very popular at the moment. I think a minimalistic approach never goes out of style.

How important is paper choice for a wedding invitation?

A good design should be able to stand up on a plain stock. Fancy papers can help provide the feeling you are going for (e.g. metallic papers for high-end style or kraft paper for a casual, recycled feel), but plain papers can also be enhanced by adding elements and care (see our blog for some ideas).

What are the important factors that couples need to consider when choosing their wedding invitations?

I think wedding invitations are a good starting point for the wedding style and feel. Well designed invites can give you a color palette to work from and a feeling to match too. Pick something that reflects who you are as a couple. Starting with something relatively simple, like a wedding invite, makes it easier to make all the other (more complicated) decisions later on. Browsing through some designs together as a couple can help you understand what each other likes and dislikes in colours and styles (our wedding invitation design templates might be a good place to start!).

Are there any big no no’s when it comes to choosing an invitation design?

Hard to understand, or overly complicated invitations can cause confusion for your guests. I would also recommend not trying to design it all from scratch, unless you are a designer. Using a well-designed template like we have on our site, ensures that fonts and colours match and look balanced and professional. It will also save you time, stress and will give you a better result.
